SARATOGA SPRINGS — A mural depicting some of the original Saratogians hangs on the wall behind City Council members during their meetings.
“The Abenaki used to call this area ‘Salatogi’ — the place of medicine water,” said Joe Bruchac, one of the organizers of the fourth Saratoga Native American Festival. “The mural is a depiction of High Rock Springs, pre-Columbus. It was a place where people would put down their weapons and drink their health.”
This weekend, the public will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Native Americans of the Northeast: their music, stories, crafts, foods, dances and traditions will be on display during the two-day event put on by the Ndakinna Education Center and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
This year’s theme is focused on native storytelling. |
