Purdue to co-host conference on ash trees West Lafayette, Indiana (AP) Feb. 2010
Purdue University is preparing to co-host a national conference on the role that ash trees play in North America’s ecology and economy.
Although an invasive insect called the emerald ash borer has killed millions of ash trees across the Midwest, organizers say that insect won’t be the focus of the symposium.
Purdue insect specialist Jodie Ellis says most of the speakers at the March 9-11 event will speak about the biology and genetics of ash trees and lumber industry-related topics.
But Ellis will discuss ash trees in lore and mythology, and American Indians will speak about the tree’s importance to their tribal culture.
The keynote speaker for the West Lafayette gathering will be an executive for Louisville Slugger baseball bat maker Hillerich & Bradsby Co.
