Lumbee meeting to discuss recognition contract postponed Fri Apr 09, 2010 A staff report
A meeting to discuss the contract between the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and a gaming consultant has been postponed.
The Lumbee Sovereignty Coalition had scheduled a community meeting for Thursday night to discuss the contract with Lewin International. It has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Prospect Men's Club in Maxton.
The Tribal Council last month severed ties with its long-serving lawyer to sign a contract with Lewin, a gaming consultant, to get federal recognition for the tribe.
A bill to provide that recognition is awaiting action in the U.S. Senate.
The contract with Lewin could cost the tribe millions of dollars if it backs out.
The Prospect Men's Club is behind Prospect United Methodist Church, at 3929 Missouri Road.
