Abenaki recognition bill awaits Governor's signature Mark Mitchell May 5, 2010
The Legislature has settled their differences on S.222 (an act relating to recognition of Abenaki bands and tribes) and have passed the latest version of the bill . TRANSITIONAL PROVISIONS Terms of the present members of the commission on Native American affairs shall expired and they may not reapply for appointment to the commission for two years following the end of their term. The governor shall appoint all nine members of the commission. As the current commission has had two open seats for most of the last two years it will be interesting to see if nine Vermont citizens will apply.
The bill now awaits Governor Douglas signature.
