Middleboro selectmen vote to call Wampanoag tribe regarding casino contract

MIDDLEBORO — Selectmen plan to follow up on a letter they sent to the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe asking if it plans to honor its intergovernmental agreement with the town.

Frustrated that they have not received a reply in three weeks from the tribe, selectmen voted unanimously Monday to ask the town manager to call the tribe.

The matter came up at the urging of resident Allin J. Frawley, who said he had lost patience with the tribe and said that if selectmen did not call then he would call daily.

Selectman Steven Spataro said, “Usually businesses will respond.”

“I agree. I am disappointed, but you can’t drag them in here,” said Selectman Alfred P. Rullo Jr. “We have a contract with the tribe to build a facility. If they want to talk to other towns, they are a private entity and can do so,” said Selectman Stephen J. McKinnon, who added he wished the contract included a timeframe.

Selectmen sent a letter to the tribe in March asking if it planned to honor its contract with the town after weeks of speculation that it might be seeking a new location to build a casino.

The tribe requested in April that the attorneys from both sides meet with selectmen privately. Selectmen responded that they would meet with the tribe in open session, but would not allow public input.
