Mashantuckets starting breast cancer program Norwich Bulletin Posted Aug 04, 2010
Mashantucket, Conn. — The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has been awarded a $35,325 grant to start a breast cancer education and prevention program. The grant was made by the Connecticut affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
The money will pay for education sessions, information booths and materials distribution. Cancer survivors who are Native Americans, community advocates and health educators will conduct programs throughout Connecticut, the tribe said in a press release.
“To our knowledge, our proposed project will be the only such Native American cancer education program in the eastern United States,” said the Ledyard-area Mashantucket Pequot tribe, which owns Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods.
