Tension rising between factions on reservation Saturday, August 21, 2010 BY LYNN MELLIS WORTHINGTON REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
KENT — Tensions are heating up on the Schaghticoke Indian Reservation and the state police on Friday positioned five troopers and cars about two miles away.
Rival factions of the Schaghticoke Indians are arguing over a planned event today and Sunday.
Representatives of the Schaghticoke Indian Tribe have organized a Green Energy Pow Wow that involves a number of bands performing, clean energy demonstrations, crafts, food, drumming, native dancing, stories and a kids' area.
However, the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation and Alan Russell, a longtime chairman of the rival Schaghticoke Indian Tribe, have united in disagreement over use of the tribe's pavilion for the event, and they have vowed to block attendees into the festivities.
